PURPOSE: To promote good fun and camaraderie for those dedicated men and women who just absolutely must go sailing on Wednesday night DATE & TIME: Wednesday, September 2, 2009. First gun at 17:55 hours
ORGANIZER: Skipper and crew of the winner of last year’s coveted “Broken Oar” award who take full responsibility for arranging for all particulars of conducting the race and presentation of awards. For 2009, the honorable organizing vessel is “Dark ‘n Stormy”
RULES:Same as Mudhead Wednesday night series except:
- CHECK IN - Check in on VHF channel 72 beginning at 5:45pm. Thereafter monitor VHF channel 68
- START LINE - Between Race Committee and mark to the east of Horseshoe Reef Nun 26.
- CLASSES - All participants will start and race as one class
- SIGNALS - No flags apply. Signals by horn and or by VHF radio apply. 5 minute start sequence to apply
- RACE COMMITTEE - Organizer will make every effort to commandeer a non racing vessel to serve as Race Committee (RC). Otherwise, Organizer shall serve as RC, in which case Organizer may race at their option after all other vessels have started.
- COURSE - To be determined at the sole discretion of the Organizer. Only government marks shall be utilized. The last mark specified shall be used as the finish. Course will be announced by RC by VHF radio channel 68 and “passing the word”. Course may be shortened at any mark at the discretion of RC and so noted by appropriate horn signals and announcement on VHF channel 68.
- FINISH LINE - If RC is present at finish line, RC shall note finish times. If RC is not on station, each vessel shall note their time when in close proximity to the finish mark and provide time to Organizer within 24 hours.
- OVER EARLY - There is no such thing as over early (or over late for that matter)
- PROTESTS - Protests are not allowed. However, any vessel accused of breaking any rule of good sportsmanship or the rules of racing shall buy the accusing vessel’s crew a round of drinks to promote equitable discussions and resolution of the matter at hand. In addition, the accusing vessel shall return the gesture of good will and buy the next round of drinks to further promote said harmony. Etc., etc., etc. (you get the idea)
- LIBERTIES - Reasonable liberties are encouraged of all participants including but not limited to: crew frivolities, costumes, decorations, signs, sound systems, creative sailing maneuvers, creative sail sets, etc.
- TIMES - Corrected times shall be calculated at the sole discretion of the Organizer utilizing any and all conventions and factors deemed appropriate. While corrected time elapsed is important, primary emphasis shall be given to the crew that has the most liberties in evidence (see above)
- TROPHIES - Two perpetual trophies apply. They are donated by the skipper and crew of Legacy III. Both are equally coveted by all participants. They shall be awarded by the Organizer at the annual end of season Mudhead Awards Party as follows:
- BROKEN OAR - Awarded to that boat and crew who earn the best corrected time (see above). The winner shall also be the next year’s race Organizer.
- RUSTY BUCKET - Awarded to that boat and crew who in the opinion of the Organizer best exemplify the spirit of “The Race to Nowhere”. The winner shall also provide a bottle of really cheap champagne for the winner of next year’s Broken Oar Award.
