Mudheads, we did good…again. Great Racing! Great Party! Great Cause!
38 boats turned out for a spectacular day of racing in light breezes. We knocked off 2 windward-leeward races for 3 PHRF classes and the Shields. We gave the competitive J-22 fleet the 3 races they asked for. The Mudhead Race Committee, under the guidance of Frank Murphy and his crew of 15 with 4 boats and a bunch of flags and guns and tomatoes, turned in another stellar performance and no one was left on the race course!
Kaizen, Showdown and Wild Angel were the PHRF winners in Classes One, Two and Three. Howard Smith’s Prudence out classed the Shields fleet with a pair of bullets. And Lee Chrisman in Hercules nipped Dave Nickerson for J-22 fleet honors. A small but game Cruising fleet saw Don and Ann Wilkerson in Sirena nip Mast Transit on corrected to win honors there.
Bijan Rasadi’s crew on Showdown, led by Bill Canning at the helm, put on a stellar show and turned in the best corrected time in both races to win the 19 year old Hospice Cup for Spinnaker Class. The Wilkersons won it in Cruising.
And then the party started! Plenty of food, free flowing rum and the Rock N’ Soul Revue made for a most delicious and delightful combination under the tent at Mystic Shipyard. Add in over a thousand dollars in raffle prizes and everyone was smiling.
It was all to support Hospice of Southeastern Connecticut and the thousands raised will go to good use locally to make the final days of our friends and neighbors a little more comfortably and dignified.
This was a new direction for the Mudheads and let me say that there is little that can compare to the satisfaction of a job well done by dozens who donated their time and the hundreds who donated their money.
This was a local event, supported by Mudheads, for the local community. Our success will sit well with everyone and our vision into the future is clear and all good.
For now, you can still support the cause by donating to one of the many fund raisning websites set up by Mudheads who participated in the race. Click here and navigate on the right side to the page you wish to support. This is a most personal effort by those who understand how important Hospice SECT is to the quality of the final days of loved ones. There is never an end to generosity.
Thank you all.
