Sailboat racing is the driving force that moves the Mudheads down the course of life. A few tacks here, a quick gybe there, a nice shimmy or two and watch out! - you are talking to yourself! The current is changing and so is the wind direction, or is it changing back? Oh, now the next leg of the course is being shifted. Which way is the mark? Is it the tomato or the tet? And where îs Looney Tunes heading? The answers are right here on the race course. And what time does the bar open and the band start?
For 2013, the 36th year of the Mudhead, Robert Austin-LaFrance is taking over the reigns as the Race Committee Chairman. Bob will be the first to tell you the Race Committee is not a one man, one woman show. It takes a village of zealous fools to plan, pull off and party on for three major Mudhead events. And a dozen or so others along the coast at other clubs and venues. Time to get moving.
It all begins at Wednesday 1800, May 8th with the annual Mudhead Rules and Tactics Seminar at the Shennecosset Yacht Club. We welcome back Dave Perry to lead us through the new Racing Rules of Sailing for 2013 and how you can use them to your tactical advantage. Details here.
The Donzo Wednesday Night Series
May 22-Sept 4, 2013. 16 races. No make ups. 8 for Spring, 8 for Summer. First warning each night is 1755. This is what happens when Mudheads can’t wait for the weekend. The mid-season party is scheduled for July 10 at Noank Village Boatyard. The Awards Party is schedule September 11, 2013 at Masons Island Yacht Club. Watch for the Notice of Race and Entry Forms coming soon. Sailing Instructions will be posted by May 8th.
The Mudnite Madness Overnite
Music, fireworks, Gumball machines and a 60 plus mile dash through the night is the way Mudheads celebrate the July 4th Holiday. This will be the 7th Annual Overnite, beginning at Horseshoe Reef on Friday, July 5th at 1800. The course sends the fleet into Block Island Sound and around the glacial leftovers from eons ago where cows swim ashore, sand slides into the ocean and according to one wise sailor now trimming the main in heaven, “the rocks move”. Yes, it’s Block Island, and it’s never better than after dark. NOR and SI coming soon. It’s gonna blow hard or just blow!
Mudhead Benefit Cup
The highlight weekend of the summer is July 19-20 at the Mudhead Benefit Cup, the annual, full on charity celebration for Center for Hospice Care Southeast Connecticut. Friday night the Racer’s Jam with racer/musicians on stage. Saturday we race on 2 or 3 circles, spinnaker, cruising, one design. Even wooden classics are invited this year. Then the Mega Party under the tent at Mystic Shipyard with Rock ‘n Soul Revue, food and libation. And you, at your dancing shoes best. Bring some cash, because we are raising money for a worthy cause, and we need you and your friends to help us.
Now race your way around the rest of the Mudhead web site and try to find a reason why you wouldn’t want to be in the middle of all this mayhem. Making the most of life, on the water and off.
