    I found this on the internet after an AltaVista search on the word "Mudhead"
The Mudheads are one of two groups of clowns in the Pueblo culture. They appear at most dances, always costumed in the same way. They wear masks made of a brown cloth, giving their heads a very rounded appearance. The eyes are outlined by a roll of the same material, as is the mouth. They wear a triangular neckpiece, usually black. Their upper bodies are bare and perhaps mud splotched. They cannot speak, but only utter uninterruptible sounds.
    They represent the idiot children of incestuous unions. They represent the results of disobedience of the strictures of society and are thus a warning against all evil.
