Greetings, Racers, -
APRIL FOOLS
What time is it, kids?! It's Mudhead racing time! The rain may have given you a head start on launching your boat, but there are still details to administer as we get set to begin the 2010 Wednesday Night Race Series. Lots of changes to report, so let's get right to it.
Many skippers responded to our end of season survey last year and after careful consideration, the Race Committee has agreed to implement several of your suggestions. There are also some new requirements from the US Coast Guard and DHS that must be implemented by each skipper, as well as new ECSA rules to be followed by all clubs. You will notice several changes on the enclosed application and waiver form. READ THESE FORMS CAREFULLY ASAP! Then send in your paperwork. We are hoping for your quick response this year to set up the Scratch Sheet early.
Here is an outline of what is new. Skippers were overwhelmingly in favor of more races so we have decided to race all 16 nights from May 19th to September 1st and to combine the fleet into two classes and run two races each Wednesday night. The legs will be shorter and with two starts instead of one, everyone will get big fleet experience and more of it. We plan to score the top 12 places for trophies each race. There will be two throwouts. In addition, a surprising number of skippers wanted to see the IRS Handicap system instituted and the RC agrees. This will simplify scoring and provide more competitive racing.
As a sign of the times, the USCG-New London will be patrolling the race course this year and is requiring all boats participating in WNRS to list their port of origin, type of weapons on board, if any, and travel history of each crew member over the last five years. Forms will be available each night on the RC boat. We also plan to work with Kattack and will create a live record of each race with on board GPS transmitters. The races will then be available on the web each night and through the season for review by all Mudheads, the RC, ECSA and DHS.
Finally, one important note. We will be short Race Committee staff this summer and are requiring all skippers to volunteer one crew member per night to help with the flags, horns, OCS's and boat IDs. Additionally, we are adding a second crash boat this season and are thankful to Bijan Rasadi for allowing us the use of his Little Harbor 38 as a mark boat.
And there's more details available on the website, so check it out, fill out your application and let's go racing. First practice race on May 12 at 1755.
Regards,
Greg Gilmartin, Race Committee Chairman
